Over the last four years, there have been a lot of changes made to United States immigration laws. We have seen changes made to the DACA program as well as other areas. The pandemic has not made things any easier for immigrants. In fact, many restrictions were put into place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, President Biden is working to rescind the immigration restrictions created by President Trump in the last few months.
The restrictions instated by Trump were first enacted in April 2020, placing a ban on some prospective immigrants. These restrictions were later broadened in June in order to suspend several temporary work visas, including the H-1B program. Before leaving office, Trump ordered a three-month extension of these restrictions. The immigration restrictions have had a large impact, with estimates that more than 8,000 green card petitions were blocked between April and November 2020 as a result of Trump’s restrictions. Currently, the Biden administration is working to rectify some of the delays and blocks that have been created.
While a lot of changes have been made over the course of the pandemic, Trump has passed many laws during his time in office, which Biden is addressing. According to CBS, in addition to rescinding the pandemic-related restrictions, Biden also intends to “rescind a proclamation Mr. Trump issued in October 2019 to allow the government to reject visa applications from immigrants it determines will not be able to pay for health insurance or cover medical costs in the U.S.” While it is clear that there are changes to come in the near future, it is unclear when these changes will occur as there is no concrete timeline in place.
